Presentation
Famous for housing the sanctuary of Notre-Dame du Laus, the commune of Saint-Etienne-le-Laus is located in the heart of the Avance Valley.
A major pilgrimage site, the sanctuary has many accommodation facilities. It was built following the various apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Benoîte Rencurel, a young peasant girl. Construction began in the middle of the 17th century. However, the village had already existed since the 13th century, when there was a parish church. Since then, the sites to visit apart from the sanctuary are the village parish church, where Benoîte Rencurel was baptised in 1647, and her birth house, as well as a number of chapels and oratories recalling the places and moments that marked the apparition of the Virgin Mary.
The area has about ten farms that mainly grow cereals, mixed farming and cattle and sheep breeding.
Opening period
All year round, every Tuesday and Thursday.
