It's here, in the Serre-Ponçon valleys, that the blue jewel of the Hautes-Alpes closes in. Like a majestic finale, the Serre-Ponçon dam, 123 metres high and 650 metres wide at its base, holds back the waters of the Durance. The size and history of the Serre-Ponçon dam make it a must-see. This monumental structure regulates the Durance River and supplies the region with hydroelectricity. 123 m high, 600 m wide and 650 m thick, it was built using materials extracted from the Durance riverbed between 1955 and 1960.
